Modena Living: Top things to do in Modena, Italy

While Italy is already one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, boasting of popular vacation cities like Venice, Rome, and Milan, one lesser known and historic pride of the country is Modena. It is a bastion of Roman glory, a seat of power during the late 1500s.

Today, Modena is famous (especially to fans of cars) for being the birthplace of the late Enzo Ferrari. But few people know that its wide, arcaded streets and squares are cultural icons; in fact, the glorious ensemble of Modena’s cathedral, Piazza Grande, and the Ghirlandina Tower are collectively listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors should begin by touring the Torre Ghirlandina located at the Piazza del Torre and north of the cathedral rises 88 meters into the sky. It was erected as a defense fortress, and now considered one of the finest campaniles in northern Italy. A visit to the older levels will reveal magnificent bas-reliefs of monsters, sirens, and knights.

For car enthusiasts, a trip to the Museo Enzo Ferrari is a must. It was where the famed car manufacturer was born and began his dreams of racing. Extensions to the preserved house have been added in the form of an exhibit hall which chronicles Ferrari’s life and work via multimedia displays, an art gallery, and an extensive collection of racing cars.

The next stop is the Palazzo dei Musei, a massive palace that houses municipal museums. You can find the province’s finest collection of Roman lapidary finds, covering Modena rich history of fine and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the modern age. Particularly interesting are the porcelain collections from the 15th to the 18th centuries, as well as an array of antique scientific instruments.
