Experiencing the wonder of Modena

Modena, Italy, should be on every person’s must-visit list. Having traveled wildly through the years and across the globe, Modena has remained one the few places I love to visit in Europe and in all of the world. Visitors will surely love the region for its culture and calmness compared to others in the country.

Cars

If you’re a car enthusiast, make sure to pay Modena a visit. The region is home to Ferrari, Ducati, Maserati, and Lamborghini. Museo Ferrari is twelve kilometers outside of town, housing the history and motoring models of the famous motor name. Other supercar manufacturers offer a tour in their factories and visitors can even test drive these supercars at Modena Autodrome.

Eats

Zampone or Cotechino Modena—the former’s less fatty version—are both dishes to try in the region. Three-star Michelin Osteria Francescana, dubbed as one of the world’s best restaurants, only has twelve tables to serve; if a dining experience here is desired, it would be best to secure a seat four months prior to your visit. Even with that kind of waiting time, a seat isn’t guaranteed. However, Osteria is always worth the wait. If you fail to have a seat reserved at the Michelin star-holding restaurant, local restaurants bring you back to the region’s roots as dishes served are of true Modena-nature. Enjoy different kinds of pasta, and ravish the sparkle of a Lambrusco.

Piazzas

Inspiring the famous Italian poem “The Stolen Bucket,” Piazza Grande and Piazza della Torre are great and timeless representations of the medieval times. The main square is surrounded by several monuments which includes the town hall, Cathedral Modena, medieval relics, and the picture-perfect 15th century tower.

Modena Living: Top things to do in Modena, Italy

While Italy is already one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, boasting of popular vacation cities like Venice, Rome, and Milan, one lesser known and historic pride of the country is Modena. It is a bastion of Roman glory, a seat of power during the late 1500s.

Today, Modena is famous (especially to fans of cars) for being the birthplace of the late Enzo Ferrari. But few people know that its wide, arcaded streets and squares are cultural icons; in fact, the glorious ensemble of Modena’s cathedral, Piazza Grande, and the Ghirlandina Tower are collectively listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors should begin by touring the Torre Ghirlandina located at the Piazza del Torre and north of the cathedral rises 88 meters into the sky. It was erected as a defense fortress, and now considered one of the finest campaniles in northern Italy. A visit to the older levels will reveal magnificent bas-reliefs of monsters, sirens, and knights.

For car enthusiasts, a trip to the Museo Enzo Ferrari is a must. It was where the famed car manufacturer was born and began his dreams of racing. Extensions to the preserved house have been added in the form of an exhibit hall which chronicles Ferrari’s life and work via multimedia displays, an art gallery, and an extensive collection of racing cars.

The next stop is the Palazzo dei Musei, a massive palace that houses municipal museums. You can find the province’s finest collection of Roman lapidary finds, covering Modena rich history of fine and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the modern age. Particularly interesting are the porcelain collections from the 15th to the 18th centuries, as well as an array of antique scientific instruments.
